It can be really nice to give people really special and lovely gifts. However, if you are on a tight budget you may find that you cannot really afford to buy the items that you would really like to buy. However, there are things that you can do which will mean that you can still give lovely things without having to pay out loads of money.
If you are given gifts that you will not use or do not really want then hold onto them to regift to someone else. It is a good idea to note who they were from as you do not want to give them back to the person that gave them to you. However, if you collect a few items then you may be able to save some money on gifts through the year. Make sure that you keep the items in good condition and do not open up any packaging so that they look brand new. Do check use by dates though, if the item is food so that you do not give a gift that has gone off. It might be a good idea to donate food gifts to a food bank if they are items that you do not like if you do not have an occasion coming up where you want to give a present.
It can be a good idea to see whether you can reuse things. Usually this is not applicable to presents, but if you are careful, you may be able to reuse wrapping paper and sometimes even cards. Cards could have paper stuck over the words inside so that they can be reused, if you are crafty you can do this in a way that will not look like you have reused someone else’s card. You can also cut up the cards to make them into gift tags. You can punch a hole in them and thread through some string, wool or ribbon and you might even be able to reuse this from gift cards that you have received. The cards and wrapping can really add up so reusing like this can make a big difference to the cost. You can either save the money or you will have more available to pay towards the present.
Sometime sit can be cheaper to handmake a gift, card and/or wrapping paper. However, this can sometimes be a lot more expensive so you will have to make sure that you carefully check this before you decide on this idea. If you are arty or crafty then it will be easier for you to make a card and wrapping paper, and you may even already have the materials available to do this with. You may also be able to make a suitable gift. It can be possible to also bake a gift, perhaps a cake, cookies or even sweets. Although these will be more expensive than shop bought, they can make a really welcome gift as people realise they are more expensive and take more effort to make. If you bought them from a shop, you could be tempted to buy extra gifts to go with it to look more like you have made an effort and spent more, but with a hand made one the effort is clear so there is no need for extras. Most people really appreciate the time and though that goes into a handmade gift.
Find Bargains / Sales
It can be well worth looking out for sales or bargain items, although you do need to be careful. It is really important to make sure that if you do buy something reduced, that it is worth it. For example, a reduced item might be out of fashion, damaged or an unpopular product or colour. It could be that you buy the reduced item when you see it, a long time before you need it and then stash it away and forget about it. It may also be the case that you end up seeing something you prefer and buy that as well and then end up spending more money than you originally set out to anyway.
