Submissions Policy

Poetry Submissions & Publishing Policy

  • Our principal mode of commissioning new work is through our annual Pamphlet and Collection Competition.
  • We do not appoint 'Scouts' to 'discover' new poetry from a limited range of poets and poetry 'shops'.
  • The competition provides the opportunity to both new and established writers to have their work published in both pamphlet and collection formats. In addition an anthology showcases the work of the poets who reach the longlist.
  • All new Templar Poetry titles are launched at the annual Derwent Poetry Festival in Derbyshire in October.
  • Templar Poetry applies strictly objective selection procedures and offers all poets who submit their work a fair opportunity to have their work recognised on merit alone.
  • In the interests of fairness we do not ask authors to provide biographic detail, endorsements from other poets or details of previous publication of their work unless they are selected as winners of the competition or as anthology poets.
  • All work is judged anonymously and the identity of the poets remain unknown until the final selections have been made.
  • A new judge is commissioned each year and this ensures that a diverse range of excellent poetry emerges rom the submissions.
  • Templar Poetry titles are produced using lithographic presses. Imaginative design and production standards are applied using in-house and commissioned artwork. All pamphlets are small, perfect bound paperback editions and all our collections are produced as case bound books with fine art book jackets.
  • Unlike other poetry publishers we do not use print on demand technology. This is in the interests of publishing and promoting our authors' work in a professional manner.
  • Our annual prize is fixed. Authors also receive a generous quota of books alongside the prize money, and are subsequently entitled to 50% discounts on books, in line with our author/publisher partnership policy.
  • Our publishing contracts and permissions are all negotiable and strictly adhere to fairness in the interests of both author and publisher. We invite all authors to submit their draft contracts to the Society of Authors and always reach a mutual agreement on publishing terms.
  • We support and represent the interests of authors in developing an audience and readership for their work using a diverse range of approaches.
  • Templar Poetry is committed to publishing poetry in both oral and text based formats.
